Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. James 3:1-5 The Tongue – Powerful Enough to Direct or Destroy Your Life! A. A Bridled Tongue Directs Your Life! Verses 1-5 James 3:2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. A Small Bit, Controls A Big Animal! A Small Rudder, Controls A Huge Ship! What does This Look like? How Your Tongue Can Direct Your Life! 1. Confess Your Sin and Sinfulness! • It Moves You to Forgiveness and Cleansing! 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. NASB • It Moves You to Justification! Luke 18:10-14 • It Moves You to Healing! James 5:14-16 James 4:6 But He gives a greater grace . Therefore it says, "GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE ." Matthew 5:3 " Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Confess Your Sin, Find Forgiveness! Speak or Deny It, and You fall deeper into Sin! 2. Confess Christ! Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. Confess Christ find Salvation! Confess Self and find Death! 3. When In Trouble Cry Out! Psalms 40: 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me and heard my cry. 2 He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the LORD. 4. Speak The Truth! Speak God's Word! It's what Jesus did! He quoted or confessed the word of God! Matthew 4:1-11 and sets the course of His last three years of ministry and preparation to go to the cross! What You Say Directs Your Life! The tongue is a little member and boasts great things! B. A Burning Tongue Destroys Life! Matthew 15:18 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. 19 " For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. 20 "These are the things which defile the man; Your Word is Powerful! What You Say directs your life and brings life! Or it Brings Death! 1. Be Quick to Hear and Slow to Speak! James 1:19 This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; NASB 2. Bridle Your Tongue! James 1:26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless. NASB 3. Speak and so Act Like you are Going to Give an Account For that Word! James 2:12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. NASB 4. Do Not Speak Against Another! James 4:11 Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it. NASB 5. Speak the Word!
