Forgiveness: Do I Really Have To?
Mike Fritscher

Are we here to meet with God? Call to action. NOW. I’m not going to wait. Will you agree with me to Obey God and do what He tells you to do today?

Share with you my top 3 experiences pertaining to forgiveness

1) Forgiveness from Mankind: Going to Catholic Confession at 10-11

First time my conscience was cleared. Remember feeling so good.

I truly don’t believe my sins were forgiven at that time.

James 5:17 confess your sins one to another

Hymn: “Nothing but the Blood”

what can wash away my sins

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

What can make me whole again

Nothing but the Blood of Jesus

Oh precious is the flow,

that makes me white as snow,

No other fount I know,

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

What the bible says:

Luke 17:3-4 “Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ forgive him.”

Luke 15:20-24 “And he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him, and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ And they began to be merry.”

2) Forgiveness from Jesus: May 31, 1993, Samuel was offered forgiveness

Colossians 3:13 “Bearing with one another and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.”

Ps 103

3) When I decided to forgive a individual who deeply hurt me.

This individual was involved in ministry

Matt 6:14-15

For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Mark 11:25 “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your transgressions.”

Jesus forgives. Luke 23:34 “ But Jesus was saying, ’Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.’ And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.”

Stoning Stephen. Acts 7:59-60 “And they went on stoning Stephen as he called upon the Lord and said, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!’ And falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them!’ And having said this, he fell asleep.”

Ephesians 4:32 “ And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”

If you don’t --- he won’t Matt 6

It keeps disqualifies from giving Matt 5:21-26 verses 23 & 24

It keeps us from being Charlie Browns teacher to God

(Not deeply theological)

1 Tim 2:8 Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension in his heart.

John 13:35 the world will know we are His disciples because we have love from one another

What the bible says about how this happens

Remember the “Call to action” earlier,

It’s time to do what you said you were going to do.

1) Repent

Rom 2:4 - God's kindness leads you toward repentance?

2 Cor 7:10 – Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation

2) Check your self to see if you are of the faith:

Let this be a mile marker, a measuring place, benchmark

Matt 5:43-48, 43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 "that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 "For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 "And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

God calls us to be “PERFECT” in loving our enemies.

3) Obey God and Forgive:

Rom 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Matt 6:14-15, 14 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 "But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
1 Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Confess and repent!

4) Practically

James 5:17 Confess one to another

Rom 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Practice doing good to these folks)

Matt 5:44 pray for your enemies.

Last Thought:

Belief gives way to action:

It is one thing to know it, and another to believe it.

When we believe it, it always results in action!

Just Do it! Just decide to forgive!

If we don’t forgive: we are the ones in bondage

Prayer of being free of Unforgiveness

Lord Jesus, thank you for dying for every sin, grief and stronghold in my life! I confess that I have walked in unforgiveness, bitterness, and anger toward ____________. This does not bring glory to your name. Will you forgive me and set me free from all unforgiveness, bitterness, and anger because really this is anger toward you. In the name of Jesus and by an act of my will, I will no longer walk in this! I remove these from my life through faith and repentance and put on the Lord Jesus Christ who is truth! As Jesus Christ is in the world, so am I! Lord your word says if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; I want to forgive Lord. Lord, help me to be a person that is quick to forgive, turn the other cheek, and bless my enemy. Lord will you bless the person(s) I have just forgiven. In the name of Jesus I receive your opportunity for forgiveness! Thank you for loving me and setting me free! In the name of Jesus, Amen
